Craft Nation: The Kingdom of Tactility by Makers Mark
Three jewellery designer/makers, two metal artists, a textile designer/weaver, a designer, a stone sculptor and a beauty chef found themselves very much a micronation in the land of Maltese craft.
Working to different standards than what appeared around them, they decided to found MAKERS MARK – a foundation with the aim of promoting excellence in contemporary Maltese craft.
Here is what they say about this project:
We design and make objects that have to be felt to be appreciated. We get inspired by our clients and in turn we inspire them. Our products are made to be touched or worn, smelt, sat on or used. They are not concepts; they are actual products made by ourselves; therefore their provenance is known.
We use recognisable raw or recycled materials that we fashion into useful and desirable objects with our own hands and tools. We are in complete control of the whole process right from formulating the design through to the finished product.
Our exhibition will illustrate the whole “journey” starting from design (notes, sketches, models etc.), photographic documentation of ‘making’ to showcasing the final products. We will be having demonstrations of different manufacturing processes during the exhibition, with the makers explaining the process as well as their tools and where the raw materials they came from.
